Problem identification

Nowadays, people can get nearly any information they want on social media and Internet. However, information is not always made rigorously and objectively. Some statements, idea, or news are deliberately or carelessly crafted in a misleading way. Yet, wrong information has the capacity to spread quickly due to its attractive characteristics: exaggeration, simplicity, and emotional resonance. Misinformation greatly affects people’s recognition of the world around them and is capable of causing serious consequences.

Audience

Our group wants to build this project to resist against misinformation through increase people’s awareness to the concept. Overall, our project’s audience can be anyone who use social media and internet to get information.

Call to action

We encourage people to do fact-checking after receiving the information. If the information is false, report it and post the true information. In addition, encourage the fact-checking and reporting habits to people’s families.

Few Tips to Combat against misinformation

  1. Always remember the following steps after reading an information: Stop, Check, Think, and Share.
  2. Ways to do fact-checking: use sites such as Snopes, PolitiFact, and AP Fact Check. Search the information at other authentic websites to confirm if it is true or not.
  3. If the information is false, what should be done: Do not just knowing the information is false, try to inform other people that they are misled. Report the false information to content moderator. Otherwise, post the fact-check result individually.
  4. Other actions: Share the method to friends and families. Rise their awareness to misinformation.

 

Misinformation do not disappear by itself. It is not enough to know the truth by yourself. Try to share your voice and findings to anyone. We all deserve to see the clearest world. Let us become a generation that protects truth, strengthens trust, and refuses to be misled. The fight against misinformation begins with us today.
